THE ARTIST
Joanne is a New Zealand-born modern realist painter, known for her dramatic portraits of cattle, stags and her stunning equine art. She captures her subjects’ physical power, yet her oil paintings embody a sense of stillness and quietude.

Her aim is to help the viewer connect more fully with the magnificence of nature, and to see these animals in a new light - with a greater sense of appreciation and awe.
The artist spent summer holidays on her aunt’s drystock farm, surrounded by livestock, and as a result developed a deep respect for the land and the animals it supported. She has been painting cattle and horses from around the world for nearly two decades.

Joanne says, “Painting is a form of grounding for me and has a meditative effect. When I am out gathering reference - whether through sketching or taking photographs - these encounters bring me into the present moment, offering a rare kind of peace that I struggle to achieve elsewhere.” It is this energy - this sense of calm and connection to nature - that Joanne hopes to convey through her work and evoke in the viewer.

“I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.”
— John Burroughs
